Simon Carter: Promenade
Often described as a painter’s painter, Simon Carter tells us he “uses the landscape to think with” as he builds up layers of paint on canvas.
Carter’s many sketchbooks are filled by drawing on location along the distinctive Essex coastline, followed by painting in the studio. It is here that the landscape is investigated and explored as Carter looks for the unexpected moments when the original impulse in the drawing reappears vivid, engaging and alive.
Beautiful, energetic and thought provoking, Promenade reveals the creative journey from sketchbook to studio.
