Join us for a tour of ‘I Put a Spell on You’ exhibition with curator Jess Twyman.
We will explore the ‘witch’ and how they have moved from victims of persecution and figures of derision, to becoming a feminist icon who provides power and agency for marginalised people.
We will focus on artists Freddie Robbins and susan pui san lok who respond to our visceral Essex history, as well as looking at the work of artists Tai Shani, Akinsola Lawanson and Alice Bucknell who explore patriarchy, colonialism and capitalism through the figure of the witch, alongside considering the feminism of Serena Korda, Juno Calypso, Chiara Fumai, and Leonora Carrington – whose tarot cards reveal her feminist beliefs and explorations into gender fluidity.
