Artist-in-residence Yvonne Buchheim approached students all over campus and asked them to sing a song of their choice, unprepared, on the spot and in front of a video camera.
Yvonne Buchheim’s way of approaching participants draws attention to random encounters while highlighting what is easily overlooked in the everyday – the extraordinary within the ordinary. The film footage of 100 encounters has been developed into two new artworks that expose the subtle collaboration between artist and performer – that moment when singing to camera reveals our hopes, dreams and vulnerabilities.
This exhibition offers an intriguing insight into campus life and creates a portrait of those that live, study and work at the University of Essex.
