Heritage Weekend – Brutalism at Essex

15.09.2024

Art Exchange

As part of Heritage Weekend, join us for an tour of the University of Essex’s Brutalist 1960s architecture.

We will take you on a tour of the University’s original 1960s architecture, including a visit to the iconicĀ  black brick residential Towers – the students’ favourite accommodation – as well as visiting the original Hex restaurant and the Library with its Paternoster lift. We will discuss the ideas and vision of founding Vice Chancellor Albert Sloman and how the university is a 3-D version of this vision built in concrete and glass.

While at Art Exchange, you can enjoy Brutal But Beautiful exhibition, which includes the first model of campus made out of LEGO (1962), and the Masterplan model which toured the county of Essex raising funds for the University in 1963-64.

Admission free – all welcome.
