Stagefright: Yvonne Buchheim

11.01.2010 - 30.10.2010

Artist-in-residence Yvonne Buchheim approached people all over campus and asked them to sing a song of their choice, unprepared, on the spot and in front of a video camera.

Yvonne Buchheim’s way of approaching participants invokes chance and casualty in the public realm. It draws attention to random encounters while highlighting what is easily overlooked – the extraordinary within the ordinary. The film footage of these encounters has been developed into new artworks that expose the subtle collaboration between artist and performer – and that moment when singing to camera reveals our hopes, dreams and vulnerabilities.

In 2003, Yvonne Buchheim started the Song Archive Project and has amassed over 800 songs from countries around the world including Ireland, Iran and the USA. This residency at the University of Essex adds another 100.
